Baby Steps Perinatal Fitness Interview + GIVEAWAY



Most pregnant women know that they should participate in some kind of physical activity while pregnant, but there are so many questions about what is safe, when to start, when to stop, etc.

Wouldn't it be great to have a personal trainer who specializes in pregnancy?

We sat down with Chad of Baby Steps Perinatal Fitness, in La Jolla, to talk about his business, work out philosophy, and the why's, when's, and how's of prenatal exercise.


1. What inspired you to start BabySteps?
  I started the program when I first found out my wife, Juliann, was pregnant with our first child. Until that time I had been working as a successful personal trainer for over 8 years, but when my wife inquired as to what forms of exercise would be most beneficial to her during her pregnancy, I was at a loss for words and felt I had to find out more. My search led me to discover an overwhelming amount of scientific research supporting the benefits of regular prenatal exercise. Most striking to me were the benefits that active mothers pass on to their unborn children. I felt the fitness world had dismissed this entire demographic due to unsubstantiated myths that exercise during pregnancy was too risky, which has now been proven otherwise. I decided to develop an exercise program that provides pregnant women with the confidence and know-how necessary to stay fit and active throughout their entire pregnancy and in to the postpartum period as well.


2. What's different about your philosophy and style than other prenatal exercise programs?

 Pregnant women often know they should exercise, but don’t know if they can safely continue with their

normal routine or if they can even begin an exercise program if they were previously sedentary. It seems
there are so many unknowns with pregnancy that women are left with a multitude of unanswered
questions and the idea of taking on an exercise program can be daunting. The reality is that pregnancy
is the ideal time to get moving. My philosophy is this- Don’t focus on what you can’t do, focus instead
on everything you can do!


  BabySteps fitness programs aim to provide women with answers to their questions regarding pregnancy
and exercise. It is unique in that it draws from different disciplines such as classic strength training,
yoga and pilates and addresses every facet of fitness such as core conditioning, strength, flexibility,
balance, cardiovascular endurance, breathing and meditation. Each program is uniquely designed so
that no two sessions are ever the same, which places different demands on the body so that the client
continues to see results. Currently, we offer private, semi-private and group exercise sessions. Women
have the option to choose the environment best suited to their personality and individual needs.


3. What are the benefits to working out during pregnancy?
 
  The benefits are endless and immeasurable. Here are just a few of the amazing benefits

  of exercise during and after pregnancy:
     
  • Eliminates or reduces pregnancy-related discomforts
  • Prevents and treats pregnancy-induced diabetes
  • Improves calcium absorption, preventing high blood pressure, preclampsia, and future osteoporosis
  • Relieves tension, stress, and possible depression
  • Reduces the strain on your back and sciatic nerve
  • Increases energy, particularly in the last trimester
  • Improves immunity
  • Strengthens pelvic floor muscles giving you better control during labor
  • Prevents or reduces the risk of labor complications
  • Minimizes postpartum blues or depression
  • Gives you time for yourself (and my wife swears by this one!)

4. When is it too late to start?

 It is never too late to embark on an exercise journey. Although it is ideal to be fit or at least planning
on it prior to conception, we don’t live in a perfect world. Pregnancy is a great time to get moving. In
fact, the real hazard is inactivity, which can lead to excess weight gain, pain, increased blood pressure
and possibly gestational diabetes. Almost 80% of women who develop gestational diabetes during
pregnancy will go on to become a Type II diabetic later in life and their children and more likely to
be overweight and develop diabetes as well. If you have no medical complications, exercise is the
healthiest decision you can make for yourself and your baby.

Baby Sign Language

Have you ever wondered what your baby was thinking, or if they even understood what you were saying?

   I love being able to sign with my daughter! Not only do we have fun bonding and learning together, but it has come in very handy! (Pun semi-intended)

  Our first introduction to signing was with the Baby Signing Time DVDs when she was about 6 months old, and at 9 months she first signed "milk". We started with the basic needs - milk, eat, more, and all done - then worked our way up.

Recently we were invited to sit-in on a Sign 4 Baby 6 week session, with Joann Woolley (pictured left, signing "duck"). 
The six weeks consisted of 6 different categories of signs; animals, family, colors, feelings, play time, nature/weather.
Joann's class is fun and interactive! It's hard to grab the attention of 6 babies between the ages of 6 months and 2 years, but she does it through singing, dancing, animal noises, and of course signing.

We're in love with her class, because not only is it a fun learning environment for you and your little one, but it also gives you the opportunity to meet other parents and make new friends. Joann is also a wealth of information, teaching not only the signs, but also how to use them and how to effectively teach them to your children. 
I learned that facial expressions and tone of voice are really key, especially when learning signs about feelings and emotions.
